Maths Mela Class 5 - Symmetrical Designs Worksheet

Worksheet: Symmetrical Designs (Class 5)

Competency Focus: Knowledge, Understanding, Computation, and Problem Solving.

1. Knowledge & Understanding

Very Short Answer (VSA)

1. Define a line of symmetry.

An imaginary line that divides a figure into two identical halves.

2. How many lines of symmetry does a circle have?

Infinite lines of symmetry.

3. Does the letter 'S' have reflectional symmetry?

No, it has rotational symmetry but no line of symmetry.

4. Give an example of a 3D object with symmetry found in a kitchen.

A cylindrical glass or a round plate.

Short Answer (SA)

5. Draw a square and show all its lines of symmetry. How many are there?

A square has 4 lines of symmetry (2 diagonal, 1 horizontal, 1 vertical).

6. Explain the difference between vertical and horizontal symmetry with examples.

Vertical: Letter 'A' (split left/right). Horizontal: Letter 'B' (split top/bottom).

Long Answer (LA)

7. List five English capital letters that have both horizontal and vertical symmetry. Draw them.

H, I, O, X. (Accept 'M' or 'W' only if vertical is discussed).

2. Ability to Compute

Very Short Answer (VSA)

1. If a shape is rotated $1/4$ turn, how many degrees has it moved?

90 degrees.

Short Answer (SA)

2. A pattern repeats every 3 cm. How many times will the pattern repeat on a border of 45 cm?

$45 \div 3 = 15$ times.

Long Answer (LA)

3. A designer creates a quilt using 8 symmetrical patches. Each patch takes 15 minutes to stitch. If she takes a 10-minute break, how long will the whole process take?

Stitching: $8 \times 15 = 120$ mins. Total: $120 + 10 = 130$ mins (2 hours 10 mins).

3. Problem Solving Ability

Short Answer (SA)

1. You are given half of a butterfly drawing. Describe the steps to complete it using symmetry.

Identify the central axis, measure distances of key points from the axis, and mirror them on the opposite side.
