Preamble of the Constitution of India

A Teacher Learning Guide for Primary Classes

Introduction

Every NCERT textbook begins with the Preamble of the Constitution of India. It reminds students and teachers about the values and principles on which our country is built.

The Preamble acts like the spirit of the Constitution. It tells us the goals of India and what kind of society we want to build.

The Preamble

We, the People of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic and to secure to all its citizens: Justice – social, economic and political; Liberty – of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship; Equality – of status and opportunity; and to promote among them all Fraternity – assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation.

The Preamble is included at the beginning of textbooks to:

  • Remind students about the values of India.
  • Develop constitutional awareness among children.
  • Promote respect, equality and unity.
  • Encourage children to become responsible citizens.
