🎨 Nature's Colours & Decorations

🌾 Villages · 🏙️ Cities · 🌈 Natural Dyes
🤔 Think about this:
“When you visit a village and when you visit a big city, do you see the same kind of decoration?”

People decorate their homes and surroundings with many things – flowers, colours, lights, rangoli, paintings, and more. But what we use can be different in villages and cities. Let's compare!

🌾 Village Decorations

MaterialsMud, clay, flowers, leaves, natural colours
StyleTraditional, handmade, folk designs
ColoursNatural & earthy colours
OccasionsFestivals, weddings, harvest celebrations
LightingDiyas, lanterns

🏙️ City Decorations

MaterialsPaint, paper, plastic, lights, metal, decorative items
StyleModern, colourful, artistic
ColoursBright and varied colours
OccasionsFestivals, weddings, national events, celebrations
LightingElectric lights, LED lights, decorative lights
🌟 Important!
It is not true that villages use only natural things and cities use only artificial things. People in both places can use both traditional and modern materials. These are just common examples – not strict rules!

🌈 Natural Dyes – Colours from Plants

💡 Did you know?
“If I want to colour a white cloth without using chemical colours, can nature help me?”

Yes! Colours obtained from plants are called natural dyes. We can get colours from:

  • Leaves
  • Flowers
  • Roots
  • Seeds
  • Peels / bark

🧪 Try This at Home or in Class!

Take a little turmeric powder and rub it on a white tissue or cloth. What colour do you see? Yellow!

Turmeric gives us a beautiful yellow colour from its rhizome (the underground stem).

You can also try onion peels, spinach leaves, or flowers – each gives a different colour!

🌿 Plant 🌱 Part Used 🎨 Colour
TurmericRhizome🟡 Yellow
IndigoLeaves🔵 Blue
MadderRoot🔴 Red
Henna (Mehendi)Leaves🟤 Reddish-brown
OnionOuter skin / peel🟡 Yellow / Orange
PomegranatePeel🟡 Yellow / Yellow-brown

🎭 Group Activity – Become a Dye Expert!

Your teacher may divide the class into 6 groups. Each group gets one dye source.

  • Group 1: Turmeric
  • Group 2: Onion peel
  • Group 3: Henna
  • Group 4: Indigo
  • Group 5: Pomegranate peel
  • Group 6: Madder

Each group must find and write:

  1. Name of the plant
  2. Which part is used?
  3. What colour does it produce?

Then present to the class in 30–45 seconds – for example:

“Our plant is turmeric. The rhizome is used to make the dye. It produces yellow colour.”

🧠 Easy Memory Trick

PART → PLANT → COLOUR

Ask yourself: “Which part?” → “Which plant?” → “Which colour?”

  • Root → Madder → Red
  • Leaf → Indigo → Blue
  • Leaf → Henna → Reddish-brown
  • Rhizome → Turmeric → Yellow

🔗 What's the Connection?

Look at both questions – Village/City Decorations and Natural Dyes. What is common?

👉 Nature → Traditional knowledge → Art → Colours → Decoration

People have used things available in nature to decorate their homes, clothes, and surroundings for hundreds of years. Today we learned that nature can provide beautiful colours too!

🌿 Let's Remember

Natural dye = Colour obtained from natural sources

  • Turmeric → Rhizome → Yellow
  • Indigo → Leaves → Blue
  • Madder → Root → Red
  • Henna → Leaves → Reddish-brown
