How festivals and traditions help us protect our environment
❓ Big Question:
“How can festivals help us protect nature?”
🤔 Think about these questions:
  • Have you ever seen a tree being worshipped?
  • Have you seen people plant trees during an event?
  • Why do some people consider certain trees sacred?
  • Can a festival teach us to care for animals and plants?

🎉 Festivals Can Show Respect for Nature

A festival is a special day when people come together to celebrate something. A ritual is a traditional way of doing something on a special occasion.

People show respect for nature through festivals, dances, and rituals. For example:

  • People worship plants or trees.
  • They decorate homes with flowers and leaves.
  • Some celebrations include planting trees.
  • Some communities have traditions connected with animals and forests.
💡 Connection: If people respect a tree, will they want to cut it unnecessarily? No!
Respect → Care → Protection

🌳 Sacred Groves – A Special Forest

Sacred Grove = A small forest protected by people.

Imagine a small area filled with trees and plants. The local people consider this place special or sacred, so they protect it. That is a sacred grove.

  • Nobody cuts the trees there, so they grow big and strong.
  • Birds, animals, and insects find a safe home.
  • It helps protect trees, plants, birds, insects, animals, and nature.
📝 Remember: Sacred groves are small forests protected by local communities.

💃 Traditional Celebrations Connect Us to Our Heritage

Different communities have different traditions. Their celebrations may include songs, dances, and music.

  • Tradition = Something people have followed and passed from one generation to another.
  • Heritage = The valuable culture, traditions, and practices passed down to us from earlier generations.

Learning about different traditions helps us understand and respect different cultures.

📖 Three Special Examples

🌱 Vat Purnima

This festival is associated with the worship of the banyan tree.

Which tree is important here? Banyan tree

🌳 Hari Jiroti

This example shows how a traditional celebration can encourage people to plant and care for trees.

If we plant a tree today, who may benefit from it many years later? Future generations, birds, animals, and people.

🐘 Kaziranga Elephant Festival

This festival is connected with elephants and wildlife and highlights the importance of caring for wildlife.

Why should we protect elephants? They are living beings, part of nature, and need forests to live.

♻️ Ways to Care for Nature

We can all help nature! Here are three simple actions:

🗑️ Reduce paper waste and say no to plastic

“Do we really need a new plastic bag every time we buy something?”

Use a cloth bag or reusable bag instead. Reduce means use less.

🌱 Spread awareness about saving plants and animals

Awareness means knowing about something and helping other people understand it.

Example: If you tell your friend not to damage a plant, you are spreading awareness.

🐦 Keep food and water for birds

Birds need food and water every day. In summer, we can help by:

  • Keeping a bowl of clean water.
  • Putting some suitable bird food.
  • Keeping it in a safe place.

🦸‍♀️ Be a Nature Guardian!

Read these situations and think: What will you do? Click each to see one possible answer.

Situation 1: You see someone throwing plastic on the ground.
✅ Politely tell them that plastic harms the environment and suggest using a dustbin. You can also pick it up and throw it away safely.
Situation 2: You see a bird looking for water on a hot day.
✅ Place a shallow bowl of clean water in a shady spot where the bird can drink safely.
Situation 3: Someone wants to break the branches of a tree for fun.
✅ Explain that trees give us oxygen, shade, and homes for animals. Ask them to stop and respect the tree.

📝 Let's Remember

  • Festivals and traditions can show respect for nature.
  • Sacred groves are small forests protected by local communities.
  • Traditional celebrations help us connect with our heritage.
  • We should care for nature by:
    • Reducing paper waste and avoiding plastic.
    • Protecting plants and animals.
    • Keeping food and water for birds.
🌟 Celebrate nature, respect nature, protect nature. 🌟
